Backing Up: Increasingly, cyber security needs to emphasize the importance of recovery

With a recent trend report showing as many as 3 in 4 companies have been the target of a ransomware attack within the last 12 months, there’s absolutely no reason not to plan as to how your organization should respond, according to an article in Continuity Central.  And while there is a ton of value in preparing by building out your cybersecurity readiness to better detect and isolate any incoming threats, there’s also a lot to be said for working to ensure your recovery planning is up to date as well, including the identification and regular backup of critical data.  In the event of a successful attack, it’s this information which is going to be in greatest demand by your employees as you attempt to get everything back online.

To be sure you’re ready to respond, done just assume the data will be ready to restore, but instead have a plan that carefully details the process, and also performs regular testing of those backups as well – it’s great to think you’ve got a backup available, but many organizations have found their backup process was not nearly as robust as first thought.  Additionally, consider implementing the 3-2-1-1-0 rule, which recommends:

  • Having three backups,
  • On two different types of media,
  • With one being offsite, and
  • With one being offline or airgapped, and
  • Zero incomplete backups
