Backing Up Business

Natural disasters can strike anywhere at any time, with potentially devastating effects on a company’s information technology infrastructure. While there’s no way to stop these disasters from striking, there are steps which can be taken to minimize their effects. Writing for Biz Journals, Gregory Zolkos, president and CEO of Atlas Professional services offers four key pieces of advice to help your company to shrug off these disruptions:

  1. Hold a strategy meetings with key stakeholders to identify critical issues and best practices
  2. Use the outputs of the strategy meeting to generate a business continuity plan, considering the worst case scenarios, identifying key personnel, and determining critical emergency functions
  3. Establish backups, whether offsite or in the cloud, so that a local disruption doesn’t take key systems offline or cause permanent loss of critical data
  4. Test the plan, to ensure employees are comfortable with their duties and responsibilities, and revise the plan to account for any flaws or omissions identified in testing

While no plan will completely eliminate downtime, following these steps will help to minimize disruptions and reduce the likelihood of losses of critical information after a disaster.
