Back In Class: With students returning to school, it’s time to refresh them on cybersecurity practices

With school already in session across many parts of the country, and students increasingly packing an assortment of electronic devices for use in their daily lessons, it’s the right time of year to remind students, parents, teachers, and administrators as to the importance of proper cyber hygiene, according to an article in Infosecurity Magazine.

“Children are taught basic safety tips like not talking to strangers and fastening their seat belts in the car. It’s also critical to teach them basic online safety tips to protect their digital way of life — at home and in the classroom,” writes Jen Miller-Osborn deputy director, threat intelligence, Unit 42 , Palo Alto Networks, in Infosecurity.

Even something as simple as enforcing unique passwords for each account, or activating two factor or authorization can make a big difference, and limit the damage in the event of a hack or breach, writes Miller-Osborn. Similarly, asking the administration what plans the school may have in the event of a ransomware attack can get them thinking about updating their security or improving their backups. Also, Miller-Osborn says it’s important to recognize that while kids may be up to date on all the new technology, they may not be as aware of good security practices, so be sure to remind them about being careful online, and keeping their devices up to date with the latest patches.
