Automatic for the People

Looking to capture the current state of cyber security, the results of IBM’s annual survey have been released. While containing information on many of the same topics as previous years, this year’s survey added questions on the use of automation within cybersecurity strategies, with concerning results, according to Information Age. With many organizations continuing to struggle to fill open cyber security positions, it seems only reasonable to expect companies to strive to improve efficiency by using automation processes wherever possible. Instead, the results of the survey show only 23% of respondents considering their companies to be significant users of automation. Not surprisingly, respondents from companies using automation extensively rate their cybersecurity capabilities more highly than those not using automation extensively, across a variety of fields: prevention, detections, response, and containment.

Outside of automation, the survey confirmed many companies are still lacking an incident response plan, and for those companies with a plan, testing is not performed regularly. A majority of respondents also stated they face frequent disruptions to IT or business processes, with 61% stating the volume of incidents is increasing, and 70% stating the severity of incidents is increasing. Despite these concerning numbers, 48% of respondents stated their belief that cyber resilience has improved.
