Artificial Assistance

Reports are constantly appearing about new applications for machine learning and artificial intelligence, as different industries recognize the potential role of such tools in assisting and supplementing humans in their activities. For business continuity and disaster planning, the traditional structure of these tasks offers multiple possible points at which artificial intelligence could be of benefit, according to an article in TechTarget, including the following points.

  • Plan development, including in impact and risk assessments, to help identify critical resources, choke points, and key personnel.
  • Plan testing, through scenario design and deployment, allowing those running the tests to inject new or changed criteria to help determine plan robustness and speed of response.
  • Incident response, to help identify patterns and make recommendations as to preferable actions by the incident response team based on the observed conditions.
  • Restoration and recovery, by initiating emergency procedures, connecting to other systems, and ensuring critical systems are backed up and ready for deployment, or by recommending needed resources for affected personnel.

While artificial intelligence may not be suitable for every task, its careful use can help reduce repetitive work, and free up resources for more critical roles.
