An Ounce of Preparedness

With National PrepareAthon Day occurring on April 30th, representatives of the DoD have released an interview discussing both the actions the DoD intends to take to ensure their readiness and to support the broader theme of readiness in the community.

Speaking for the Defense Department, deputy assistant secretary of defense for homeland defense integration and defense support of civil authorities Robert G. Salasses commented on issues like preparedness,  noting that the DoD attempts to integrate their emergency management with the surrounding communities at long-standing installations, internal beliefs, observing “One of the top priorities of [DoD] is focusing on the well-being and safety of each member of our workforce and their families so that we can continue to safeguard U.S. security”, and the importance of National PrepareAthon Day, calling it “a great day to think about preparedness.”

Organized by FEMA, the national America’s PrepareAthon! Campaign states its campaign goals to be increasing the number of individuals who:

  • Understand which disasters could happen in their community
  • Know what to do to be safe and mitigate damage
  • Take action to increase their preparedness
  • Participate in community resilience planning
