An International Effort: Multinational cooperation is required to address cyberattacks

To fight cyberattacks, it is becoming increasingly obvious that international cooperation is required. Just as it was decided over a hundred years ago that it was in the best interest of all nations to share weather-related information for the advancement of public safety, the sharing of information on cybersecurity could greatly improve modern conditions, argues an article in Scientific American.

To help support this goal, the U.S. worked to form Information Sharing and Analysis Centers (ISACS) twenty years ago. These ISACS are non-profits with the goal of collecting, analyzing and sharing of information related to cybersecurity threats between members, to mitigate the risks imposed by these threats to members.

The next step is to further encourage this sharing of information between nations via either an international coalition or multinational agency, while also encouraging early disclosures of threats by private businesses, according to the article. With earlier disclosures, and international sharing, both private and public organizations can better work to protect themselves against developing cyberthreats.
