An Alarming Situation: Risk mitigation continues to evaluate the best methods for issuing alerts and alarms

With much of the discussion of risk management being focused on cybersecurity threats, the rapidly developing and changing fields of alarm and alert technologies have often not received their deserved attention, according to an article in CIO. With alerting offering routes to mitigate risk through more rapid notifications and robust monitoring, it still often lags behind other aspects of organization risk management in terms of priority.

To ensure a proper system, organizations should carefully consider their specific needs, and the suitability of specific tasks to alerting, as well as the downsides. Ultimately, a company should examine where an alerting system could be introduced, what should trigger an alert, who should receive the alert, and how any alert would be transmitted. Considerations should also be given to any legal requirements and guidelines for the alerting process, as well as any risks or negative behaviors which could be introduced by the use of alerting. While alerts may help an organization to respond, any alerts are only as good as the underlying system driving them.
