A Canadian province is getting ready to roll out a new text message system to warn residents about impending emergencies. Alert Ready is a Government of Canada initiative for residents of Ontario and uses information gathered from The Weather Network and Pelmorex Corp., who operates the National Alert Aggregation and Dissemination (NAAD) System.
The system was developed with partnerships through federal, provincial and territorial emergency management officials, Environment and Climate Change Canada and the broadcast industry. Alerts can include natural disasters such as wildfires, civil emergencies, drinking water contamination and terrorist threats.
Promotional materials have included the slogan: “Your phone has the power to save a life.”
