Ahead of the Wind: When preparing your hurricane Go Bag, don’t forget to consider what sort of tech and apps to include

When you’re in a zone prone to natural disasters, and particularly one where you may be forced to evacuate due to winds and flooding, it’s always a good idea to have a Go Bag prepared and waiting. And while it’s important to ensure that bag include basic items like water bottles, blankets, and a first aid kit, it’s also critical to consider what readily available pieces of technology or apps you should include to help you on your way to safety, according to an article in PC Mag.

This list can range from the extremely conventional, in flashlights and an emergency radio, to the easily overlooked (solar powered battery chargers, and extra charging cables and power bricks), to the more exotic (perhaps an Alexa-enabled device, or other item capable of giving emergency alerts, or phones with supported emergency SOS functions).

For apps, PC Mag advises that people should also plan to have a couple pre-installed apps to help supplement radioed emergency or weather updates. According to PC Mag, amongst the most informative and easiest to use are:

  • Emergency: Severe Weather App, produced by the American Red Cross, and providing both weather updates and locations of Red Cross shelters
  • Clime, provided by the NOAA, and capable of sending users relevant weather alerts.
  • My Radar Weather Radar Pro, offering an animated live radar update of your current location.
  • Weather Bug, which combines weather updates with real-time traffic information, and works with the Apple Watch.
