Aftershocks: Ten years after the Fukushima disaster, rebuilding slowly continues

A decade after the Fukushima disaster, the efforts to recover are still in progress, and aren’t expected to be completed any time soon. The combination of a 9.0 magnitude earthquake and the resulting tsunami, the disaster is directly responsible for the death of almost sixteen thousand people, and indirectly for almost four thousand more.

Having learned from the damage caused by the disaster, Japan has spent considerable effort to add resiliency to the area, with investment in both concrete seawalls, and an inland embankment which will eventually be 270 miles in length cone completed, around Ishinomaki.

Even a decade after the disaster, over forty thousand people have still been unable to return to their homes, as the area around the Fukushima Daiichi plant is still considered to have unsafe levels of radioactive contamination. While officials estimate it may take another forty years to properly clean out the nuclear plant, some critics believe that to be overly optimistic, due to the challenges around the cleanup.
