With the rise in violent events on campuses – most recently, in Parkland, FL, where 17 people were killed in February – reviewing active shooter protocols have become an unfortunate necessity for emergency management professionals, students and teachers alike.
The Department of Homeland Security’s published guidelines on surviving such an attack includes detailed information such as how best hide and how to respond to law enforcement’s arrival on scene. It lays out the necessary components to train staff to respond in active shooter situations, and walks organizations through the creation of an emergency action plan (EAP). The report also contains instructions for different roles during an emergency and its aftermath, such as the responsibilities of the human resources department, facilities manager and other supervisory staff.
