A State of Security: State and local governments look to improve their cybersecurity protocols

As high profile cyberattacks like the SolarWinds breach draw the attention of the news, legislators at the state and local levels are increasingly looking into raising minimum standards for government cybersecurity, according to an article in Security Magazine. Long having underfunded their cybersecurity teams, municipalities are finding themselves targets of hackers eager to steal data, or lock it away via ransomware, and struggling to catch up.

Flowing down from the federal level, where initiatives have been launched to ensure minimum cybersecurity standards for DoD contractors, or the Department of Energy looking to work with private industry to upgrade cybersecurity protections for the national power grid, states are launching task forces and seeking to expand awareness training to ensure government employees and contractors are better prepared to identify threats, writes Matthew Hodson, co-founder and CIO of Valeo Networks. These increased efforts will almost assuredly lead to an expansion of budgets and resources, as local networks are brought up to new standards.
