A Rise in Resilience: In recovering from Hurricane Maria, Puerto Rico has become a testing ground for disaster preparedness

Puerto Rico has learned some hard lessons from Hurricane Maria. With memories of both the immediate devastation and the long term impacts, including extended loss of power from the traditional grid, individuals and organizations have looked into alternatives to better ensure their resilience in the face of future storms. Looking toward technologies like detachable solar panels, which can be quickly removed before a storm and reinstalled after, organizations within the nation are leading the way in the region for robustness solutions, according to Devex.

Speaking at Centro MAM, a non-profit maternal health center in Puerto Rico, former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said of the efforts, “A lot of the resilience that is being shown every single day here is exactly the way forward. It’s not waiting for some one size fits all solution. Speaking specifically of the solar panels, Clinton noted “It’s not just one center — it is a model that can be replicated in other places. The removable panel idea is brilliant. It is so incredibly smart to think that if we have more storms you would take that down and store it.”
