For IT professionals or people tasked with an organization’s cybersecurity, it can be an uphill battle to get the message across to other people within the company. Sometimes, people’s reluctance can be born out of an inability to understand the necessities of the cybersecurity measures, or the technical language used to describe them.
Jason Christopher, principal cyber risk advisor at Dragos, writes in Forbes about approaches that may work more successfully, namely by rebranding cybersecurity teams and efforts as allies and part of a mutual defence.
Christopher suggests three ways to accomplish this task:
- Understanding knowledge gaps and ensuring that the different approaches required.
- Using an emotional hook, such as protecting their home or loved ones.
- Rewarding efforts rather than shaming mistakes to create a culture of cybersecurity defenders.
