A Nationwide Plan: The US has announced a new national cybersecurity strategy

Looking to improve the national sense of cybersecurity, the US government has recently announced a new strategy intended to help build cyber resilience, as reported by the World Economic Forum. As noted by President Joe Biden in the framework, “Cybersecurity is essential to the basic functioning of our economy, the operation of our critical infrastructure, the strength of our democracy and democratic institutions, the privacy of our data and communications, and our national defence. We must ensure the internet remains open, free, global, interoperable, reliable, and secure – anchored in universal values that respect human rights and fundamental freedoms.”

This National Cybersecurity Strategy relies on a set of five goals or focuses:

  • Defending Critical Infrastructure, by establishing minimum standards for all sectors
  • Stopping Threat Actors, by establishing partnerships with the private sector and other nations to help block malicious organizations
  • Driving Security and Resilience, by encouraging investment in cybersecurity, and shifting liability for bad security
  • Building a Diverse Workforce capable of handling the nation’s cybersecurity needs, and investing in cybersecurity research
  • Working internationally to establish and pursue shared cybersecurity goals
