A Healthy Response: What you can do to ensure you’ve got a healthy digital immune system

Often, cyber security is talked about as isolated bits and pieces, never quite all fitting together into a unified whole that both provides solid cyber defense and a supportive user experience. Instead of thinking about cyber security in this way, companies need to think about it as an integrated environment, similar to the human immune system. This digital immune system acts as a unified set of practices and technologies which together provide a robust defense against cybersecurity threats and business continuity risks, according to an article in Gartner.

To build this digital immune system, six practices or technologies need to be considered and integrated, according to the article:

  • Observability, allowing information on user behavior to be examined to improve user experience;
  • Testing, using AI supports, to complement automated testing and planning;
  • Chaos engineering, to examine systems for vulnerabilities or weaknesses;
  • Autoremediation, to help recognize and resolve contextual issues with human intervention;
  • Site reliability engineering, to focus on improving customer experience without compromising safety, stability, and security; and
  • Supply chain security, working with suppliers to identify potential software risks from suppliers and third parties.
