U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina M. Raimondo has announced $20.6 million has been allocated for fishery disaster funding. The money comes in response to the 2023 fishery resource disaster that affected California’s Sacramento River Fall Chinook and Klamath River Fall Chinook ocean and inland salmon fisheries.
“Fishery disasters have wide-ranging impacts and can affect commercial and recreational fishermen, subsistence users, charter businesses, shore-side infrastructure and the marine environment,” said Raimondo. “These funds will help affected California communities recover and improve sustainability.”
Funding for the disaster was determined by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries using revenue loss information from the commercial, processor and charter sectors.
Activities that may be eligible for funding include fishery-related infrastructure projects, habitat restoration, job retraining, permit buybacks and more.
Disaster relief funds will be administered by the state of California and NOAA Fisheries.
