A Future of Resilience

Canada, with input from both the provincial and federal levels, has recently released a new report detailing approaches to improve national resiliency to natural disasters. The document, titled Emergency Management Strategy for Canada: Toward a Resilient 2030, looks to break down key areas of activity and project actions which can be taken over the next five years, according to Canadian underwriter.

Focusing on activities like improving the understanding of disaster risks, enhancing disaster response and improving coordination, and working to improve rebuilds after disasters for improved robustness, the report also outlines opportunities for private sector participation, including through the seeking of comments and analysis from organizations like the Insurance Bureau of Canada, and the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction. For the former, inputs have been made on the management of flood risk, while the latter has discussed the possibility of rebuilding to new buildings standards to improve resiliency.

Discussions remain ongoing, and a spring symposium is planned to allow for further inputs from private sector experts and key academics.
