A Different Type of Virus: Companies will need to update their cybersecurity goals in response to COVID-19

As COVID-19 has disrupted many of the traditional office places and interactions, increasingly pushing work offsite and shifting more interactions to the Internet, it is vital that companies update their policies to still ensure aggressive protection of critical data and the personal information of employees and customers. For some industries, many of these changes had already been considered, but for others, these changes have been much more rapid than planned.

Writing for Compliance Week, David Kessler, Public Sector Counsel for Verizon, offers five recommendations to help smooth this transition, and set up a robust foundation for handling further changes;

  1. Adopt the cybersecurity framework proposed by the National Institutes of Standards and Technology (NIST).
  2. Increase employee and client education around phishing attacks.
  3. Train employees on best practices for cybersecurity, including for remote work.
  4. Ensure collaborative tools are fully patched and secured, with key security features enabled.
  5. Support remote interactions where reasonably possible.
