A Better Balance: A new global report from the UN indicates countries with greater involvement of women in leadership do better in crisis response

A new report by the UN Women and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) points to a strong correlation between gender equality and the ability to respond to crisis, and provides tips for countries’ governments to rework their emergency response strategies to be more gender inclusive.

“Countries with stronger social protection systems and public services do better on gender equality and have correspondingly been better able to weather the storms of recent years,” said UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous in a press release from the UNDP. “This report shows that when women lead, everyone benefits from a more inclusive and effective crisis response, and more resilient economies and societies, today and in the future.”

The report surveyed 5,000 policies across 226 countries and territories. It pointed to the increased impact of lower job opportunities and higher unpaid domestic work and care for women during times of crisis. The report also discussed how women are left out of decision and policy making measures, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic response.
