Unknowingly a Target: SMBs are frequently finding themselves the victims of cybersecurity threats, without a proper plan for recovery

The big companies make all the news when they’re hacked, but that doesn’t mean smaller companies can’t also be the target of hackers and scammers. And for a small company, with a limited cybersecurity and recover budget, anything which compromises their systems can be devastating to their bottom line, or even their ability to continue normal day-to-day operations, cautions an article for Forbes.

To help harden your SMB against a hack or ransom event, there are certain things you can do, even with limited resources. First, take a survey and catalogue or document your key systems, and critical data, including where it’s stored, who has access, and when and how it’s needed.

Second, work out how long you could continue to operate without critical data, including considering how losing access would affect you, and how having it exposed to others would compromise your business.

Third, using the information gained from the survey and analysis, develop a plan for backing up any critical items identified, securing those key resources against attack, and restoring systems from those backups. Most importantly, test these backups and plans. More than one person has been horrified to find that those backups they were relying on to get up and running were incomplete or corrupted.
